Get ceiling fans for the winter!

We all know that ceiling fans will keep you cool with a lovely breeze in the summer but did you know that they also have a huge benefit in the winter?

By reversing the rotation of your ceiling fan you will no longer feel a cooling breeze, instead you will reclaim hot air trapped at the ceiling by pushing the hot air up and bouncing it down to where you are, this means that you will feel warmer and can reduce the temperature setting on your thermostat, the right fan can lower heating costs by as much as 25%, so it is pretty much essential to purchase a ceiling fan for the winter and not just for the summer!

Most of our fans have a reverse function which can do this, Hunter ceiling fans are the most efficient and so you will get pay back for your investment faster, this is due to the design of the Hunter fan blades, the larger fan you get the more air you will move so therefore greater savings will be achieved, so always buy the largest size fan that will fit in with your room.

Whichever ceiling fan you get, make sure you buy one with reverse function and remember to switch it on for massive fuel savings this winter.

Which is the best portable air conditioner?

The best portable air conditioner you can get is a twin pipe model, where one of the pipes exhausts the hot air and the other takes the inlet air from outside, portable air conditioners fitted with a single pipe take their inlet air from the room being cooled which creates a negative room pressure, this negative pressure causes hot air to be drawn back into the room, but with a twin pipe system the pressure is equalised so no hot air is drawn in, meaning that a twin pipe unit will give up to 25% better cooling performance.

The Prem-I-Air PTP35D portable air conditioner with remote control is a twin pipe unit, it is extremely versatile as it cools, heats and dehumidifies all in one. The dehumidification aspect is a natural process caused by cooling the room but is important as it stops the air from feeling sticky.

The PTP35D is great looking but is also very robust and is designed to last for a lot of cooling seasons, the front panel of the unit is rubberised so it can withstand knocks and scrapes, it comes on casters so can be positioned where you want.

This portable air conditioner has 3 fan speed settings, a 24hour timer, a temperature dial control with VDF colour display.

Another great feature of this air conditioner is that the unit is self evaporating which means there will be no buckets of water to empty as with a lot of other portable air conditioners.

The unit has cooling capacity of 12,000btu (3.5kW) and a heating capacity of 4,000btu (1.2kW) which is suitable for rooms up to 35 m2. Operating temperature cooling is 16~32ºC, Heating 5~27ºC

So if you want the best portable air conditioner tis summer at the best price the PTP35D  can be bought at online or by phone at Air Comfort Centre Ltd, click here to link to the sales page.

National Allergy Week

May 10, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment

It is National Allergy Week in the UK from 10 to 14 May 2010, Air Comfort Centre would like to contribute to the efforts made to highlight this sometimes crippling ailment by offering the following information and advice.

What is an allergy?

The word allergy is used to describe a response, within the body, to a substance, which is not necessarily harmful in itself, but results in an immune system response and a reaction that causes symptoms in a predisposed or sensitised person which can cause a great deal of misery.

An allergy symptom can take the form of anything from a runny nose, itchy eyes or skin rash to extreme breathing difficulties. It aggravates the sense of smell, sight, tastes and touch causing irritation, extreme disability and sometimes fatality. It occurs when the body’s immune system overreacts to normally harmless substances.

Allergy is widespread and affects approximately one in four of the population in the UK at some time in their lives. Each year the numbers are increasing by 5% with as many as half of all those affected being children.

So what causes allergies?

Allergic reactions are caused by substances in the environment known as allergens. Almost anything can be an allergen. The most common allergens are pollen from trees and grasses, house dust mite, moulds, pets such as cats and dogs, insects like wasps and bees, industrial and household chemicals, medicines, and foods such as milk and eggs.

An allergic person’s immune system believes allergens to be damaging and so produces a special type of antibody (IgE) to attack the invading material. This leads other blood cells to release further chemicals (including histamine) which together cause the symptoms of an allergic reaction.

What can you do to relieve allergies?

Firstly it is important to identify to cause of the allergic reaction and isolate the person from it if at all possible, visit your doctor and get advice of what drugs are available, anti-histamines can help reduce the allergic reactions, you may also need steroid and/or salbutamol inhalers if you get severe breathing difficulties.

It will also help if you can clean the air you breathe with an air purifier, HEPA or Airfree type air purifiers will be very effective as they will remove allergens such as dust mites, pet dander and moulds from the air which cause allergy symptoms, have a look at the range of air purifiers available for Air Comfort Centre by clicking HERE.

Humidifiers for cigar storage

April 29, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Product advice

“It says nothing lasts forever. But still, some things can be prolonged…. like the quality of cigars.”

The key to good cigar storage is to use a quality evaporative humidifier. Prolonged cigar storage relies on consistent levels of air humidity. Humidification does not only influence the quality of a cigar, it also has a pecuniary aspect. One buys and/or builds a stock usually when the favourite brand is on sale.

Cigars should be stored at approximately 70% air humidity and a temperature of 20C. A cigar that is too dry gets hot while smoking, it burns fast and unevenly while another that is too wet creates difficulties when it is being lit, and even more with a puff. In any case you will not have the smoking pleasure you deserve!

Tobacco is a hydrophilic (water-friendly) material; i.e. it can absorb and dispose of humidity. Cigars come from very hot and humid climates, so in a European environment it is necessary to add humidity. This means that cigars, which are stored at constant air humidity, maintain their quality and value.

The right air humidity has the same importance for the quality level of a cigar as for example, the tobacco itself or the rolling. Too low air humidity makes a cigar brittle and dry. The consequence is that the cover leaf will tear off, the cigar will burn too fast and the taste materials are not really developing, a constant air humidity of approximately 70% is important for a cigar.

When choosing a humidification system it is especially important that it works with the evaporation principle, such a system creates evaporation for the largest possible humid surface. The humidity is dispersed into the air, and parts of it such as minerals or calcareous deposits stay in the surface medium. This avoids dust and minerals contamination on the cigars which can be seen with ultrasonic type humidifiers.

The circulation of humidity is important for the storage of cigars. Because all cigars should be humidified evenly, it is important to make sure that there is air circulation with a ventilator especially in storage boards or rooms. To create 70% air humidity, a large enough humidification surface should be available. The larger the filters surface, the higher the evaporation performance.

The water tank of an air humidifier should have such dimensions that it has to be refilled not more often than once week. The humidification system should be equipped with a humidistat to keep the air humidity controlled on a constant level.

The best type of humidifier for a professional humidor is the Brune B500 which can be either manual of auto fill, it comes with UV and limescale protection and a wireless humidity sensor, the Brune B500 is available through Air Comfort Centre Ltd and you can purchase and read more about it and other types of humidifiers by clicking HERE

Why choose Hunter ceiling fans

March 30, 2010 by admin · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Product advice

Well, for a start Hunter created their first ceiling fan in 1886 they are the largest manufacturer of ceiling fans in the world and Hunter ceiling fans are recognised as the best quality and the most innovative on the market today, they exceed European safety specifications and give lifetime warranty on ceiling fans with the Airmax motor.

Hunter Fan Company invented the auto-balancing ceiling fan. This technology uses a flexible disc that ensures fan blades operate smoothly and evenly with each rotation, this is true wobble free technology which is not available on any other ceiling fan. Hunter fans are made from top quality materials and they are built to last, the lifetime guarantee on the Airmax motors is testament to this

Ceiling fans have become very popular over the last few years, they are a sought after home accessory and are ideal for use in your lounge, kitchen, dining room, bedroom or conservatory. They look great and the downdraft from a ceiling fan provides a cooling wind chill effect which makes you feel up to 5 degrees cooler

In the winter, ceiling fans working in reverse reclaim hot air trapped in the ceiling, this can lower heating costs by as much as 25%. Ceiling fans can also cut your cooling costs in summer, reducing existing air conditioning bills by up to 40% by moving the colder air up

While many ceiling fans may look like a Hunter fan, if it’s not built by Hunter it won’t be as quiet, smooth, balanced and beautiful and won’t have the same warranty

Some important facts to consider before making your purchase….

How good is the fan at moving air?
How quiet is the fan?
Will the fan wobble?
How long will the fan last?
Will the manufacturer stand behind the warranty?

Air movement

Many competitors fans do not move much air. A ceiling fan that looks nice but moves little air is a comfort to no one. One of the keys to proper air movement is blade pitch. The greater the pitch (angle of the blade) the greater the air movement but this is providing that the blade pitch has been properly harmonized with the motor. Some manufacturers skimp on materials and don’t use powerful enough motors to support the blade pitch required, so they compromise on blade pitch, sacrificing proper air movement to reduce the stress on undersized or under-powered motors. Many fans also use extra thin blades to reduce cost. The reduced blade surface area means reduced air movement.

Why fans are noisy?

An electrical humming created when a ceiling fan is running is usually the result of poor engineering design and a lack of precision manufacturing. Some manufacturers use inexpensive ball bearings to reduce cost, even though these are a common source of operating noise. A lack of proper dampening between metal parts can also create and intensify noise, as can the use of extra thin materials.

Why do fans Wobble?

Many factors can produce fan wobble. Substandard blade materials and improper blade sealing can produce blades that absorb moisture and warp—a prime source of wobble. Blades that are not matched in carefully weighed and balanced sets can also wobble. Inconsistent blade mounting brackets can create varying degrees of pitch (blade angle), throwing a fan into an unbalanced wobble. And poorly manufactured motors have rotors that can easily get out of balance, generating wobble from the very heart of the fan. Inexpensive mounting systems with pin fasteners can also contribute to wobble.

Common reasons for ceiling fan breakdown

Motor size and blade pitch are not matched correctly.
Inferior quality on/off pull chains can become faulty and be pulled out of the housing
Inadequate quality, testing, manufacturing and inspection procedures send poor quality fans to market
Defective motor windings can lead to electrical shorts in the motor
Low quality fan bearings may be “shielded” on only one side which allows dust to enter causing premature failure.
Inexpensive materials, poor engineering, and substandard manufacturing processes are used to create “bargain” fans

Why Brass Finishes Are Not Alike

In the beginning all brass finishes look great. Then tarnish and dark spots begin to appear. You may even notice the brass on the fan is a different color than the light kit you just added

Hunter warranty

Hunter backs its Airmax motor fans with a lifetime motor warranty, and backs that warranty with nearly 120 years experience. No other manufacturer has that kind of record to stand on

Other considerations

Hunter Fan Co Ltd consistently achieves more patents than any other ceiling fan manufacturer. They are granted the most patents with 34 in 2005 alone. Many of the really useful quality features are patented and cannot be copied by the competition

Hunter fans are equipped with Hunter’s patented Airmax motor, designed to run cooler and quieter from the inside out. Featuring a die-cast multi-fin aluminium rotor and exclusive impeller (a fan within a fan), the Airmax is the quietest, coolest, smoothest-running motor everHigh output

Hunter fans features a Hunter high output motor. Designed for superior performance and crafted with the finest materials, the Hunter high output motor delivers a lifetime of whisper-quiet, powerful air movement

Hunter’s exclusive new Wobble free Canopy systems, including the self-aligning trilobular mounting ball. The trilobular ball maintains even contact with the canopy, eliminating stress points that can cause wobble

Most fans can be operated by an optional wireless remote control for convenient, easy operation in bedrooms and rooms with high ceilings. The remote can control the fan speed and also dim the light

Optional wall control, for easy fingertip fan and light control. Patented design accommodates both square and rectangular electrical boxes

Optional light kits provide decorating versatility by giving the option of installing a variety of light kits

Accommodates any type of room or installation situation. Choose from 3 options:

  1. Standard mounting on a flat ceiling

Patio heaters for the summer

Patio heaters are becoming a ‘must have’ product for the British summer these days and it’s hard to believe but British Summer Time starts this Sunday 28 March

Even in the summer it gets chilly when the sun is going down, pubs and restaurants obviously need them in order to take advantage of al fresco dining opportunities and to cater for smokers but increasingly patio heaters are also a ‘must have’ item for homes, extending your evening and keeping you warm until after dark in your garden

Infrared or radiant electric outdoor heaters are the best kind to get as they heat people and objects but not the air, so the heat cannot be blown away and no energy is wasted as with gas heaters, also you don’t need to lug heavy gas bottles around

There are 3 types of electric patio heater, wall mounted, freestanding and parasol mounted for if you want a neat solution for heating around your garden table

If the heater is going to be exposed to the elements it is important to buy IPX5 rated weatherproof heaters which are fine to leave out all the time, if the heater is going under an awning or overhang then IPX3 splash proof will be sufficient, regarding power, the most popular size is 2kW which gives a good balance between economical energy consumption and good heating capability, 3kW heaters are the maximum you can run from a standard UK plug but remember you cannot plug 2 heaters into the same extension cable as it would overload the circuit.

Air Comfort Centre stock a comprehensive range of electric patio heaters including the ever popular Zeus and Neptune IPX5 freestanding patio heaters we also supply Heatmaster parasol heaters and a complete range of Burda infrared heaters for indoors and outdoor applications.

Dyson Air Multiplier Review

The humble desk fan has been reinvented and it’s time to do away with those pesky fan blades which are usually a fundamental part of any desk fan design

The Dyson Air Multiplier has no blades, it drags air in via a motor in the base and accelerates it through a ring at the top before forcing it out through an airfoil-shaped ramp. The end result of this design, combined with air dragged into the flow from above and behind is a 15 fold amplification of air flow. This means it drags in 27 litres of air per second and expels more than 400.

The fan speed is adjustable via a dimmer switch mechanism, providing more precise air flow control than the normal 3 speed settings found on conventional desk fans

The position of the heavy motor in the bottom of the unit makes for stability and it enables the easy tilt mechanism.

James Dyson highlights the specific benefits of the Air Multiplier over conventional bladed fans saying: “I’ve always been disappointed by fans. Their spinning blades chop up the airflow, causing annoying buffeting. They’re hard to clean and children always want to poke their fingers through the grille, so we’ve developed a new type of fan that doesn’t use blades”

The fan is constructed of a tough thermoplastic with the same shock absorbing properties found in car bumpers and crash helmets. Available in a choice of 10” and 12” sizes which are both priced at £199.99, the desk fans are not cheap but they are very stylish and are selling out very fast

Easy to use, easy to clean, safe for children and ultra cool in both senses of the word, the Air Multiplier is the best desk fan ever

Hunter Ceiling Fans

“>Hunter Ceiling Fans will help make your home more comfortable during both summer and winter months, you can run a ceiling fan for just pennies a day and save money on air conditioning costs in the summer and you can also reduce heating bills in the winter.

How They Work

Summer

When it’s warm, the blades of a ceiling fan set to forward will push air downward, causing cooler air near the floor to travel upwards where you will feel most benefit, the air movement directly on you can make it feel cooler by four degrees or more and if you’re using air conditioning along with your fan, you can set the thermostat at a higher setting than normal to get the same cooling effect and save up to 40% on energy.

If you use ceiling fans in the summer however, keep in mind that it does little good to run them when you’re not around. The fan really isn’t cooling the room. Like a breeze on a hot summer day, it’s the blowing air moving across your body that makes you feel cooler.

Winter

In winter you can use the reverse function on the ceiling fan which changes the direction the blades turn, so instead of forcing air downward, the blades will push air up toward the ceiling where hot air rises to and you can bounce it off the ceiling and drive it back down without the cooling effect of air movement directly on you, using the reverse fan direction in winter will result in more even heating and savings on your heating bills of up to 25%.

Hunter ceiling fans have 3 speeds forward and 3 speeds reverse so you can always get the right setting whether you need a strong wind to cool you or set to a quiet lower fan speed at night so you can sleep

Air Comfort Centre have a wide range of Hunter ceiling fan designs and accessories at the best prices on the web, all fans are supplied with free delivery to mainland UK, click on the link at the top of the page to see the whole selection.
